*Recipe* Making Your Own Petit Fours

I wanted to serve petit fours and tea for a snack for some little girls of a friend who was planning a visit.  The bakery I usually go to was closed for vacation - so I  put on my thinking cap and came up with this simply brilliant alternative!

 Gather the following items:

* A store bought pound cake
* Your favorite jelly
* Powdered Sugar (about 2 cups)
* Water
* Food coloring
* Squeeze tube gel icings
* Cake/cookie decorations

Start by cutting the pound cake into thin slices (about 1/2") and trim the crust from all sides.  Take two slices of poundcake and essentially make a jelly sandwich by spreading a thin coat of jelly on one side of a slice then top off your sandwich with another slice of poundcake.

Cut the "sandwiches" into 4 little squares and put the squares into the freezer on a plate or cookie sheet lined with wax paper or a wire rack for a little while (just until you are done making the icing in the next step).

Use the powdered sugar and water and make your icing concoction.  Add a tiny bits of water until the mixture is smooth and drizzly. Then separate the icing into cups and add some food coloring to each one to make pastel colors like pink, yellow and light blue.

Get the poundcake sandwiches from the freezer and spoon-drizzle the icing all over the cake until it is completely covered. When the icing has hardened and is completely dry you can decorate your "petit fours" with whatever you like. I used those little squeeze tube gel icings and put the girls first initial on some of them and then added some of those little sugar cake decorations.

They were so cute......and relatively easy. They would be a great mother/daughter tea party snack making project. I bet chocolate (oh, white chocolate) would work too!  Colored chocolate, like red or green for the holidays - once you have matered this simple art - the possibilities are endless!
